In 1899, Siemens & Halske built a lamp works on Helmholtzstraße. Its light reached cities around the world under the name OSRAM. In 1926 the great workshop hall followed, and it still stands here today. For four decades, IAV, founded out of TU Berlin with Volkswagen as a shareholder, has developed the drivetrains of millions of cars in the blocks around it.
Light, then motion, now intelligence. This ground has changed industries before. This quarter gives it the third chance.
1899 baute Siemens & Halske an der Helmholtzstraße ein Glühlampenwerk. Sein Licht erreichte unter dem Namen OSRAM Städte auf der ganzen Welt. 1926 kam die große Werkstatthalle dazu, die bis heute hier steht. Seit vier Jahrzehnten entwickelt die IAV, gegründet aus der TU Berlin, mit Volkswagen als Gesellschafter, in den Blöcken drumherum die Antriebe für Millionen Autos.
Licht, dann Bewegung, jetzt Intelligenz. Dieser Boden hat schon einmal Industrien verändert. Dieses Quartier gibt ihm die dritte Gelegenheit.
At the end of the nineteenth century, this is where Berlin turned science into industry. Siemens & Halske lit the world from Helmholtzstraße, and the Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg trained the engineers for it a few streets away. Then came motion, with the workshop hall of 1926 and IAV, which developed the drivetrains of millions of cars on this ground.
Light, then motion, now intelligence. Twice this ground has changed how industry works. The third time begins with the people who do research here today.
Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde hier aus Wissenschaft Industrie. Siemens & Halske brachte von der Helmholtzstraße aus Licht in die Welt, die Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg bildete wenige Straßen weiter die Ingenieure dafür aus. Dann kam die Bewegung, mit der Werkstatthalle von 1926 und der IAV, die hier die Antriebe für Millionen Autos entwickelt hat.
Licht, dann Bewegung, jetzt Intelligenz. Zweimal hat dieser Boden verändert, wie Industrie funktioniert. Das dritte Mal beginnt mit den Menschen, die hier heute forschen.

The plot with the listed hall is joined by the office building behind it, where TU Berlin already works today, and by the FrischeParadies block on Helmholtzstraße. On a quiet bank of the Spree, framed by two waterways, lies one of the last large sites in the centre of Berlin’s scientific heart. Within a short walk, the Technische Universität, Fraunhofer institutes, the University of the Arts and one of Europe’s most productive AI research communities.

The base case is the architect’s massing study as it stands, the sculpted copper houses around the listed hall, 8 to 12 storeys, the hotel on the roof of the hall. The vision case brings the TU building behind the hall into the project and lets the house at the water grow into a tower of about 60 metres, the reference point the quarter needs.Der Base Case ist die Massenstudie der Architektin, wie sie steht, die skulpturalen Kupferhäuser um die denkmalgeschützte Halle, 8 bis 12 Geschosse, das Hotel auf dem Dach der Halle. Der Vision Case holt das TU-Gebäude hinter der Halle ins Projekt und lässt das Haus am Wasser zu einem Turm von rund 60 Metern wachsen, dem Bezugspunkt, den das Quartier braucht.

A quarter at the water in the middle of Berlin’s science cluster. The tower of about 60 metres stands at the front of the plot towards the water, set back floor by floor, the copper houses behind it, the listed hall in silver as the square of the quarter, the TU building stays. Homes, a hall full of life, labs and companies on one ground, built for the people who make the city’s knowledge.Ein Quartier am Wasser mitten in Berlins Wissenschaftscluster. Living, lifestyle, a network and technology in one place, designed around the needs of the people and companies of the science cluster and open to everyone. The quality of stay this ground has been missing.
Wohnen, Lifestyle, Vernetzung und Technologie an einem Ort, konsequent auf die Bedürfnisse der Menschen und Unternehmen aus dem Science Cluster ausgerichtet und offen für alle. Die Aufenthaltsqualität, die diesem Boden bisher fehlt.
Researchers work in projects of three or four years, founders need a floor and a network, families need a home. So the quarter offers apartments and co-living next to owner-occupied homes, a hall for food, hospitality, events and sport, and floors where labs and spin-offs share the ground with the companies that hire from them.
Forschende arbeiten in Projekten von drei oder vier Jahren, Gründer brauchen eine Etage und ein Netzwerk, Familien ein Zuhause. Deshalb bietet das Quartier Apartments und Co-Living neben Eigentumswohnungen, eine Halle für Food, Hospitality, Events und Sport, und Etagen, auf denen Labore und Spin-offs den Boden mit den Unternehmen teilen, die bei ihnen einstellen.

In February 2024, ZEKI Berlin and the Qatar Free Zones Authority agreed to build ZEKI Doha, a research centre for experienceable AI. HELMHOLTZ is its Berlin address, the place where Qatari partners reach the talent that would never move to the Gulf, and where research, capital and city life share one ground.
Im Februar 2024 haben ZEKI Berlin und die Qatar Free Zones Authority den Aufbau von ZEKI Doha vereinbart, einem Forschungszentrum für erlebbare KI. HELMHOLTZ ist die Berliner Adresse dazu, der Ort, an dem Partner aus Katar die Talente erreichen, die nie an den Golf ziehen würden, und an dem Forschung, Kapital und Stadtleben einen Grund teilen.

The area between Salzufer, the Straße des 17. Juni and the Spree has universities, institutes and companies, but no centre and no name. Housing has been built here, a quarter has not. HELMHOLTZ is the first move, the place where the people of the cluster meet after work, and its effect reaches across the street to TU Berlin and down to the water.
Das Gebiet zwischen Salzufer, der Straße des 17. Juni und der Spree hat Universitäten, Institute und Unternehmen, aber keine Mitte und keinen Namen. Wohnungen wurden hier gebaut, ein Quartier noch nicht. HELMHOLTZ ist der erste Zug, der Ort, an dem sich die Menschen des Clusters nach der Arbeit treffen, und seine Wirkung reicht über die Straße zur TU Berlin und hinunter ans Wasser.
A quarter like this does not compete with the district. It switches it on.
